Water Kefir - A Probiotic Powerhouse

Are you wanting to try making your own water kefir at home? I will bring a limited number of jars containing a cup full of these precious babies to the Orange Farmers Market this Saturday. With more diversity than any supermarket kombucha these guys will get your gut singing a happy tune.

I have been busy in the kitchen making vanilla, raspberry and cherry kefir drinks to bring along, I hope to see you there!

Kefir Care

This is a daily chore – especially in summer – these guys are fed a 3 % sugar solution every day… you need to decant the liquid out of their bottle or jar (that’s what you drink – thanks babies!) and replace it with a fresh solution.

I make my solution by dissolving the sugar in hot water and then allowing it to cool to room temperature before I add it to their bottle.

You will need a cheese cloth or paper coffee filter to cover the opening of their bottle (so they can breather – but nothing can get into their bottle). This is secured using a rubber band. A fine mesh strainer is also a necessity to stop them from escaping when you are decanting the liquid. Make sure you have plenty of sugar in the pantry as well – they tend to go through a lot of it!

Their bottle will need to be kept in a cool dark place (like the pantry).
